Where Are All the Fat People?
You know whenever I go to the gym I am the ONLY one even remotely overweight (I’m way more than remotely!)! How come I only see fit people at the gym??? Where are all the people that NEED to be there? I get so tired of feeling all the eyeballs on me when I go there. Maybe it is a testament to the people that go.. but ALL of them?? I have so many things I should probably be blogging about, but I really thought I would mention this because it upsets me! I’m getting more used to it than I was. The first time I went was at 6pm on a weeknight. That was insanely packed and.. of course.. I was the only fat one! It isn’t much better early in the morning although it isn’t as busy, it is the die-hard fitness people sharing the room with me. Oh well! I’ll be one of them some day!
I know how you feel. It is the same way at the gym that I go to (when I go) but it is fit young guys!!! So my sister and I try and go when when it is 50 plus people and it is great. There conversations are always about where they are going to eat after they get done with their work out!!
Oh honey, I totally know how you feel! And the worst part are those girls who just walk around in their cute little outfits, but don’t every really do anything?!?! Geez, but don’t let that get you down! You can do it!
Yes you will be one of them someday.
Just do your workout with pride.
You really should be proud to be there.
Keep up the great work

Lori
You WILL be one of them - you ARE one of them but just don’t quite look it yet. I know there may be some of them actually looking at you for the reasons you fear (always are some) but if you stick it out I guarantee most will be looking at you because they respect your work ethic and are impressed with your transformation. Keep going - and keep smiling!
Beebee,
We are here… walking miles with Leslie at home, gliding on a Gazelle, jogging on a treadmill in a basement, jerking free weights on a stability ball, and walking outside. Getting ready for a gym. Getting there.
Try to go late in the morning or early afternoon. There are older people exercising and people who are not in a great amazing shape.
Keep going there. Walk tall and proud with your shoulders back and your head high. You are getting healthy girlfriend for yourself and your baby. Kudos to you!
Tatiana
That is why I bought a treadmill for upstairs and quit paying gym dues. I just got so tired of, like you, being the “fat chick.” None of them were nice either so that makes it even worse. They stare you down like, “what is SHE doing in HERE.”
I don’t think I will ever return but I might. If I do and I’m skinny, I’m going to choose the largest person in the room and be nice to them.
I sure know how you feel, but good job in being the brave one who goes!

I’ve been in your shoes Beebee. I guess that’s why I quit going. But, the more I think about it, the more I think we look at it all wrong. We assume that everyone is judging us because of our weight but perhaps they are actually looking at us and thinking, “You go girl!! Keep it up!” Maybe we actually inspire them. I say, keep going and hold your head high because you are doing something to improve your health.
Beebee. I totally get this. I want to be one of the skinny girls at the gym just doing it because it feels good. Yeah, right. Anyway, here’s the thing. I used to hide in a corner of the gym (as much as one exists) and try to basically do anything I could to get people to just ignore me. And if I got up the nerve to go to group fitness, I’d be in the back, again in the corner. But then I finally realized that virtually none of those people were paying any attention to me, so I decided to come on out and be the center of the universe. Now, if they actually are wondering about me, I know they more than likely are pretty damn impressed that the fat girl in the front row can out-Step them and out-Kickbox them and out-treadmill them every single time. I agree with bugnpigsmom… we’re probably inspirational. I know I think you are - why wouldn’t they? Big hugs, Ellen
I’m the big one in our gym. It’s kind of funny. But one thing, it’s the company’s gym. All in all, my co-workers are supportive, too supportive. If I don’t go, they try to guilt me into going. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Keep you head high, because maybe in the minds of the gym rats, they are saying “You Go Girl!”.
